Instant Pot Urad Dal (Split Black Gram)
An easy recipe for urad dal with black pepper
Ingredients
Urad Dal
- 1 cup Urad Dal Split
- 5 cups Water
- 1 tbsp Crushed Garlic
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric
- 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1/2 Jalapeno
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 Lemon Juice after cooking
- Cilantro for garnish
Tarka (Fried Spices)
- 2 tbsp Cooking Oil
- 2 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1/2 Onion
- 1 tbsp Crushed Garlic
- 1/4 tsp Asafoetida Powder
- 1/2 Jalapeno Pepper
Instructions
- Soak the dal over night
- Rinse the dal before adding to the instant pot
- Add the dal, water, jalapeno, turmeric, salt, ground black pepper and garlic to the instant pot
- Stir, close the instant pot and set to high pressure for 12 minutes
- Prepare the tarka next
- In a small fry pan, heat the cooking oil and add the cumin seeds. They will sizzle. Do not let them burn!
- Add the onions and asafoetida powder. Mix everything on the fry pan
- Continue stirring and let the onions start to turn slightly brown. Add the garlic and jalapeno
- Continue frying the mixture until it starts to turn dark brown
- The dal in the instant pot should be done. Release the pressure
- Add the tarka to the dal
- Turn the instant pot to low saute mode and mix it. Add the lemon juice
- Let the dal simmer in low saute mode until it has the thickness you desire.
- Dal is ready to serve
